Some grow up in a warm and supportive environment, but many experience a childhood full of hurt and stress. In the world of psychology, these experiences are known as childhood trauma– emotionally painful events that can last well into adulthood.

The question is, can painful experiences really shape a person’s personality? The short answer is: yes. And this is why undergraduate psychology programs pay so much attention to the dynamics of trauma and its impact on human development.

What is Trauma?

Trauma means a psychological disorder resulting from an extremely painful or threatening experience. Rather than being physical, trauma often leaves deep emotional and mental scars.

Some common forms of trauma include:

Accident or natural disaster

Physical or verbal abuse

Neglect by parents

Repeated witnessing of family conflict

In psychology, trauma is classified into two:

Acute trauma: occurs due to a single, highly disruptive event

Chronic trauma: occurs repeatedly and continuously over a long period of time

Getting to Know Childhood Trauma

Childhood trauma is referred to as a traumatic experience that occurs when a person is still in the early developmental phase, generally between the ages of 0-12 years. During this time, children are still emotionally vulnerable and do not have strong self-defense mechanisms.

Childhood trauma can result from:

Sudden loss of a parent

Being bullied at school

Witnessing constant parental arguments

Being treated unfairly, scorned or belittled

Why is childhood so important?

Childhood is a key foundation of personality formation. When children feel insecure, unloved, or under constant stress, it can become embedded in their subconscious, and form patterns of thought and behavior that carry over into adulthood.

Impact of Past Trauma on Personality

The impact of past trauma on personality varies depending on the type and intensity of the trauma, as well as the social support available. Here are some of the possible impacts:

1. Problems in Managing Emotions

Overreaction to criticism

Easy anxiety, panic or depression

Difficulty trusting others

2. Social Relationship Disorder

Avoiding close relationships for fear of abandonment

Becoming too dependent or conversely, too withdrawn

3. Blurred Self-Identity

Unsure of life choices

Feeling worthless

Frequent self-blame

4. Compensative Behavior

Addictions (food, alcohol, social media)

Overachievement to seek validation

In the undergraduate study of Psychology, students are invited to analyze how this kind of trauma can create an “inner wound” that is invisible, but has a long impact. This is important, because understanding the root of the problem is the first step towards healing.

What Can Be Done to Heal Trauma?

While the impact can be profound, childhood trauma is not the end of the world. There are many ways to heal these wounds.

1.
