Currently, the<a href=\"https:\/\/bpsy.telkomuniversity.ac.id\/en\/\"> <strong>Bachelor of Psychology<\/strong> <\/a>program is one of the favorite study options because of its broad scope and its very real application in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, before it became the popular field of study that it is today, the science of psychology has gone through a long journey that is interesting to trace. Let&#8217;s explore how the history of psychology formed and grew in Indonesia! \ud83d\ude0a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Psychology: Young Science with Philosophical Roots<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the scientific realm, psychology is a young branch of knowledge. Compared to other sciences such as math or physics, psychology has been a part of philosophy for much longer. For centuries, psychology has been the branch of philosophy that deals with the human psyche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interest in investigating psychological phenomena goes back a long way. Greek philosophers were the first to show interest in this. At that time, there was no scientific proof; the discussion was limited to thoughts and theories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the great figures known to study aspects of the psyche include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plato (427-347 SM)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aristotle (384-322 AD)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Their descriptions revolved around the relationship between body and soul. This was the initial foundation of what would later develop into psychology as a science in its own right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around the 7th century, the term psychology came into use, although the scientific approach was not yet developed. The turning point came in the 19th century when psychology began to separate itself from philosophy and stand as an independent discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the important figures in this phase was Wilhelm Wundt who established the first psychology laboratory in Leipzig, Germany in 1879. This is where modern psychology began to run with the scientific method based on experiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Psychology in Indonesia<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The introduction of psychology to Indonesia is inseparable from the Dutch colonial influence. Through the colonial education system, psychology was introduced in an academic context. The University of Indonesia became a pioneer in officially opening a psychology department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The year 1953 is an important point in the history of the development of Indonesian psychology, because it was in this year that the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia, was officially established. He played a major role in the development of psychology and in the establishment of the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from him, several other figures also made major contributions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dr. Slamet Imam Santoso<\/strong> &#8211; pioneer of educational and social psychology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prof. Dr. Fuad Hassan<\/strong> &#8211; academic figure and former Minister of Education and Culture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prof. Dr. Koentjaraningrat<\/strong> &#8211; although better known as an anthropologist, he contributed important ideas in cultural psychology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They laid important foundations that are still used today in the education and practice of psychology in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Historical Relevance of Psychology in the Modern Era<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is it important to understand the history of psychology?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because from history, we can know the roots of every approach, theory, and practice used today. <strong>Psychology undergraduate<\/strong> students will be wiser and more critical in applying theories if they understand how the theory developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, the challenges of psychology today are complex, ranging from the rise of mental health issues, social pressures due to digital media, to shifting cultural values.
